Queensland Art Gallery

Located just steps from the Gallery of Modern Art, the Queensland Art Gallery is the prime visual arts centre and nationally recognized national museum. The Queensland Art Gallery has joined together with the Gallery of Modern Art and when one is referred to, both are thought of.

The first building opened its doors in 1895 but the premises operated out of temporary facilities until 1982 when its permanent home was established at the highly acclaimed and architecturally unique Brisbane’s South Bank. In the 1990s the second building was acquired and the Modern Art gallery was formed.

The gallery is designed to bring art to the community and emphasizes learning programs for children. The programs at the facility have been coordinated with the Children’s Art Centre.

The gallery offers an onsite gift shop open when the museum and gallery are open to visitors. The shop offers souvenirs, books and information, t-shirts, snacks and jewellery from local artists.

Cafes are located within the gallery and its adjoining building. The Watermall Café is found at the Queensland Art Gallery and the Foyer Bistro is located at the Gallery of Modern Art. The River Café is situated along the bank of the Brisbane River at the Gallery of Modern Art and offers a prime location for visitors of the gallery to mingle over a fine meal.
